Digit group separator in pivot table - what should the default value be?

Hi there,

we are getting many (conflicting) requests for what the default value should be for the “digit group separator” in the pivot table app.

So lets decide with a poll… Cast your vote here before Friday 6th!

http://doodle.com/poll/vtyzgts226aqihev

The digit group separator controls how large numbers are being split up, e.g.

1 432

1,432

1432

The digit group separator can be controlled from Options.

To me the most important way to address this is to allow an implementation-wide default. The space character is in many ways the “correct” separator according to international norms, and is even making inroads into countries such as the US that traditionally use the comma. I think the space is probably the best “factory” default for DHIS 2, so that large numbers are readable on demonstration systems, and so we follow international and emerging standards.

However, an implementation should be able to override this with an implementation-wide default of comma, where a preponderance of users for that implementation are more used to this, and/or where exporting to Excel is a concern.

Expecting users to override the default every time they create a pivot table is not very user-friendly.

Supporting Jim’s suggestion on a system/implementation setting to configure a default system-wide separator in addition to the possibility of overriding this for each pivot table or other type of report with display options. I guess the result of the vote could still be what the default value for this system setting should be…

In Vietnam it’s also comma, so a system wide solution would be good (not for output only, but only for input would be good… if possible)

Hi there,

we are getting many (conflicting) requests for what the default value should be for the “digit group separator” in the pivot table app.

So lets decide with a poll… Cast your vote here before Friday 6th!

The digit group separator controls how large numbers are being split up, e.g.

1 432

1,432

1432

The digit group separator can be controlled from Options.

Good point: actually it's not only the digit group for pivot table, but rather
[digit group, decimal point, default number of decimals] for any [input, output,
import and export] that should be defined in the systems settings.

But I fear that the implications on the coding will be much bigger than what
Lars originally intended

In Vietnam it's also comma, so a system wide solution would be good (not
for output only, but only for input would be good.. if possible)

Hi all,

many thanks for all the feedback. Will make this configurable per system
then given the all the various opinions.

Another point of clarification: It seems that space is a preferred
separator in the Web based pivot table. However, when downloading to Excel,
it seems space is useless as it makes Excel interpret the cell as text, not
numbers.

So as a short term solution (which could be back-ported) could be that when
downloading to Excel, the system could fall back to no separator when space
is selected as separator. This because space never seems useful for Excel
spreadsheets.

Would that work?

regards,

Lars

I *think* we discuss the space separator business purely related to
display. So when exporting to excel, or any other case where the
number is expected to be consumed as a number (including storage in
the database), exported via api in json/xml datavalueset etc there
should be no spaces, commas etc. Confusion on this would be a recipe
for disaster.

Everyone seems to agree that how numbers display should be
configurable. Though I thought the question was more what would be
the default appearance in the absence of any configuration. In which
case there are only two approaches: (i) pick something, in which case
space seems to be the most standard default, or (ii) infer something
based on the locale.

Hi there,

many thanks for all the feedback and the votes.

The feedback clearly tells that there are multiple needs / views out there, and that having this configurable per system is desired. So we will turn this into a system setting for 2.24.

Issues:

https://github.com/dhis2/settings-app/issues/62

https://github.com/dhis2/dhis2-pivot/issues/5

Thanks again for the feedback.

regards,

Lars
