Upgrading servers to version 2.13

Dear Support,
I am responsible for dhis2 in Sierra Leone. My central server is running on version 2.12 and i have 13 regional server all running on different versions starting from version 2.9 - 2.12. Please i want all the servers to run on version 2.13 but i need the best advice to upgrade these servers since this is really critical.

Dear Gerald

First you need to take note that you need to upgrade from one version to another sequentially. That is from v2.9 you go to v2.10, then v2.11, v2.12 and finally version 2.13.

How to upgrade, first make a backup of your database, then stop your tomcat. Then, delete the old dhis folder and dhis.war file, put the new version, restart tomcat.

Hi Gerald,

The biggest challenge is to get all the data in one database when you have all these local district databases on DHIS 2 versions which may or may not be compatible in terms of data import/export.

Also note that a database will usually get corrupted when you downgrade the DHIS version, e.g when going down from 2.12 to 2.10 to be able to import data from a district with that version (just an example) .

So keep lots of database backups, basically one for each district and relevant DHIS 2 version combination and work your way up to 2.13 with import/export.

When you have all data in one place running 2.13 you can then put a copy of that database at each local office. Or hopefully you are able to switch to online use by now.

Pay special attention to the tomcat log at DHIS 2 startup when the startup routines (automated db update scripts) are done. If you get errors there then your upgrade is likely to have failed.

Good luck and keep using this list for questions that you might have.
