Guidance on Designing a Reproductive Health Tracker Program in DHIS2

Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to develop a single comprehensive Tracker program for Reproductive Health in DHIS2. The goal is to track individual-level patient data across multiple reproductive health services. Based on aggregate reproductive health items in DHIS2 and the WHO/HRP reproductive health framework areas, I have figured out following stages.

Can I propose the following limited set of essential program stages for this Tracker program?

Stage Name Purpose / What It Tracks
Family Planning Counseling, contraceptive method selection, follow-up visits, method continuation or changes.
STI Screening & Management Testing, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of sexually transmitted infections (including Urethral Discharge, Syphilis).
Abortion Care Pre-procedure counseling, procedure details, post-abortion care, and contraceptive counseling.
Antenatal Care (ANC) Routine pregnancy monitoring, lab tests, risk assessment, maternal interventions.
Delivery Birth details, skilled birth attendance, and complications management.
Postnatal Care (PNC) Mother and newborn monitoring, breastfeeding support, early detection of complications.
Tetanus Vaccination Immunization during ANC or PNC to prevent neonatal tetanus.
Birth Registration Recording vital events, including live births, linked to maternal and newborn care.

I would also like to note that only some of these stages have pre-developed DHIS2 metadata:

  • Antenatal Care (ANC) – available from the RMNCAH ANC Registry.

  • Delivery – can reference ANC/PNC Tracker stages.

  • Postnatal Care (PNC) – included in ANC Tracker metadata.

  • Tetanus Vaccination – available in Immunization Tracker metadata.

  • Birth Registration – can reference Immunization Tracker or Vital Events metadata.

The other stages, such as Family Planning, STI Screening & Management, and Abortion Care, would require custom configuration, as pre-developed Tracker metadata for these services is not readily available.

I am seeking guidance from the community on the following points:

  1. Are there existing DHIS2 Tracker programs or metadata sets that cover Family Planning, STI Screening, or Abortion Care that I could reference?

  2. Any best practices or recommendations for structuring a single comprehensive reproductive health Tracker program with multiple stages?

  3. How to integrate program rules and data elements effectively across these stages for patient-level tracking?

Any advice, references, or examples would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.
