Hi

We have a data element with category options that we would like to present in a stacked column chart. Ideally, the graph would be showing number of family planning devices (by device type) provided over time. However, we can’t seem to figure out how to create this chart with data element/category options. Any ideas?

Hi Paul,

First you need to make sure your data element category (“FP device type” or similar) is enabled as data dimension. Edit the category and make sure the option “Use as data dimension” is ticked.

This will make your category a separate data dimension in analytics, e.g. in data visualiser (DV). You need to re-run the analytics export after this (if you made a change to the category that is).

Then go to Data Visualiser and look for the new dimension (data element category) in the left side menu (a tab with the same name as the data element category, e.g “FP device type”) and select all its options. Also select the data element, orgunit and periods you need.

In layout put your data element category dimension (“FP device type”) in the series area and period in the category area. Data element and orgunit in the filter area.

Change chart type to stacked bar chart, and click Update. This should give you a staked bar chart with your FP devices by type over time.

Hi Paul,

It depends on how many data dimensions you have enabled of course, but my experience is that you can have quite a few before it becomes difficult to navigate the left side menu in the analytics modules.

But looking at it from the other side, why collect this extra dimension it if it’s so rarely needed in analysis?

There are a few more possibilities for your chart, but it depends on whether the your data element(s) have other categories in the category combination. If FP device is the only category then you can use the details option in the data element selection on DV. Select all the detailed data elements (with category options, your FP devices) and put the data dimensions on series in your chart.

If you have other categories combined with FP devices then you have to use an indicator to add together your category option combinations for each FP device.

If your chart aggregates together data for multiple data elements for each device, then you must add all these data elements together in the indicator as well.

I find it a lot easier to enable the category as a data dimension.

Thank you so much for the response, we really appreciate it. I’m sorry, just a quick follow-up question – so for any data element we want to display by category as a trend, would we need to add it as a data dimension? We’re just concerned about keeping the data dimensions manageable on the visualizer and pivot tables. For instance, most of our users won’t be using the ‘FP Device’ categories (vs gender or age, which will be more commonly used).
