New webpage: DHIS2 for Noncommunicable Diseases
We’ve just published a new page on dhis2.org covering how DHIS2 is being used to support noncommunicable disease programs: https://dhis2.org/ncd/
NCDs account for 74% of all deaths globally, with the majority occurring in low- and middle-income countries — yet NCD data systems in many countries remain fragmented or underdeveloped. Because DHIS2 is already the national health information platform in more than 75 countries, it offers a practical foundation for integrating NCD data collection and use into existing health systems without starting from scratch.
The page covers the full range of NCD use cases we’re seeing in the DHIS2 community, including:
- Routine NCD reporting — using existing DHIS2 facility data for NCD monitoring and readiness assessments
- Screening and patient management — including the Rwanda NCD tracker, which increased screening coverage from 30% to more than 91% in two years, and hypertension and diabetes trackers developed in collaboration with Resolve to Save Lives
- Cancer data systems — including integration with CanReg5 and work with the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines
- Cross-cutting analytics — combining NCD data with HIV, TB, malaria, and other program data to analyze comorbidities
- Climate and NCDs — early warning systems for extreme weather events, air quality monitoring, and AI-powered modeling with the Chap Modeling Platform
- Integration and standards — ICD-10/11, FHIR-based interoperability, lab systems, and the cause-of-death module
The page also covers partnerships with the World Diabetes Foundation, Resolve to Save Lives, WHO/IARC, PAHO, and CARPHA, and includes links to resources, metadata packages, and community discussions.
