DHIS2 FlexiPortal Apps

Introduction

Video

DHIS2 FlexiPortal is a highly customizable, deployment-ready, public-facing web portal designed to facilitate streamlined, secure access to data housed within a DHIS2 instance. It serves as a bridge between complex information systems and a broader audience, including policymakers, researchers, media, and the general public, by providing a user-friendly interface for viewing key indicators and analytics.

This portal streamlines the process of sharing data by allowing organizations to publish DHIS2 visualizations, including charts, tables, and maps, as well as other resources such as documents, directly on the web with minimal technical effort. It supports a wide range of visualization types already configured in DHIS2, ensuring consistency and accuracy in the presentation of data.

FlexiPortal is built with flexibility in mind, offering customization options to match an organization’s branding and communication needs. It also emphasizes security and access control, allowing administrators to choose what data is made public and what remains restricted.

By reducing the barriers to accessing and understanding data, DHIS2 FlexiPortal promotes transparency, accountability, and data-driven decision-making, ultimately encouraging greater data use and engagement from stakeholders at all levels.

Motivation

With the growing emphasis on enhancing data use across DHIS2 implementations, one key approach has been to make data more accessible to the public. Many countries and organizations have already developed public-facing portals to share DHIS2 data, eliminating the need for user authentication. These initiatives aim to promote transparency and encourage broader use of data by making it available to stakeholders such as researchers, policymakers, and the general public.

However, developing and maintaining these custom portals often involves significant technical effort, making them difficult to scale or standardize across different contexts.

FlexiPortal was conceived as a response to this challenge. Drawing from our experience working on public data portals in various countries’ implementations, including Tanzania and Somalia, we identified the need for a simpler, more efficient, and manageable solution. FlexiPortal serves as an abstraction layer and standardization tool that simplifies the process of exposing DHIS2 data to the public. It enables the creation of consistent, secure, and easily maintainable portals that can be quickly adapted to different countries’ needs, all while minimizing the need for complex custom development.

Features

FlexiPortal comes equipped with a range of powerful features designed to make public data sharing easy, flexible, and impactful. Key features include:

Highly Configurable FlexiPortal offers extensive customization options—from the overall color scheme and branding to the specific visualizations displayed. Configuration is made simple and intuitive through the FlexiPortal Manager App, allowing administrators to tailor the portal without needing advanced technical skills.

Dynamic Visualizations: Seamlessly display DHIS2 visualizations such as charts, maps, and tables. These interactive elements enable the public to explore and engage with data in an accessible and visually compelling way.

Static Content Support: Enhance your portal with static content like blogs, articles, or announcements, ensuring that your portal remains lively and up to date with relevant information.

Document & Resource Sharing: Easily share important documents and resources stored in DHIS2, such as reports, policies, and datasets, directly through the portal, improving access to critical reference materials for your audience.
