Details
In support of its malaria elimination strategy, Zambia embarked in 2011 on developing online systems to improve the collection, collation and analysis of malaria data. With the technical assistance of PATH/MACEPA, the Malaria Rapid Response (MRR) system was developed to complement the National Health Management Information System (HMIS). Based upon the DHIS2 platform, it was initially conceived as an information system to support malaria surveillance, provide timely and quality reports on infections and intervention commodities, give insight into the continued progress in reducing malaria burden in more focalized transmission patterns, and enable faster retrieval of critical information on malaria disease burden, testing and treatment commodities. This abstract describes the context and history of how MRR came into existence initially in a few districts in Southern Province before expanding nationally, its use at facility and community levels, the information that has been extracted, and the data-driven decisions made as a result of this investment in support of the National Malaria Elimination Programme in Zambia.
