Guys - i have up to close to 100 people to create usernames for in DHIS2 system…Is there a way i can import these using the import export functionality…or is there any other way?

Yes, we have done this quite a few times in Rwanda. I can send you the excel template and the SQL queries needed to update the various user table. The only thing we can’t do is create the hashed password. Normally I send the spreadsheet to Knut or Bob Jolliffe and they create the hash password.

I Think another way could be to use a WebAPI … though that would require you to do some coding (One time coding) on a import script …
But First try the Randy’s alternative.

User support in the Web-API is not very good at the moment. I’m hoping to improve this in the future, but I would go with the approach outlined from Randy.
Jason has had some luck with using R for this kind of stuff (including generating passwd).

Here is some really hacky R code to generate a bunch of users. The script is really basic, and really needs more work to automate it fully, but it will work. It will undoubtedly need to be tweaked to your needs, but you should be able to see the general approach.

Attached are some instructions and a template file that you can use to collect the data in excel – I would test on a local copy of the database before using on the production server.
If you use this template, I can redo that R script to read it, and then create the SQL to insert the users fairly easily.
Let me know if you need help with this.
Best regards,
Jason

I am totally agreed with you and the painful process of user creation in DHIS2, specially, if some one need to create thousands of users by following steeps given in the link below
But still, I would recommend you to follow these standard steeps given in above link for user creation in DHIS2, this is most trusted and officially recommended. This is one time job and usually it takes time, if one need to create users in bulk.
Probably, you might find 6 other different hacking techniques and solutions suggested by Randy, Jason and others to do the same work of user creation in DHIS 2, but don’t trust
on any work around hacking technique at all for doing this work. Always chose to opt the
best officially recommended process for doing certain work in DHIS 2 as given in user manual on above link.

Brajesh

I would be more than happy to allow you to create 300 users for me next time I need to do this, however, this is not really a feasible option for me!
Please present some concrete ideas (preferably code) in terms of how to better solve this problem, which I think everyone would be happy with, but in the absence of a way to create many multiple users through the user interface, I do not see any other way other than the “hacks” suggested.
It is the best option I have come up with. If you have a better one, great, but creating several hundred user accounts through the user interface is really not one of them.

There is a difference, how you are thinking about a community based information system developed by using great methodology for doing certain good work, however it varies from person to person, perhaps we can simply categories like given below,
DHIS2 – As a data enty end user / data analyst user
DHIS2 – As a core developer
DHIS2 – As a system administrator
DHIS2 – As s solution architect
DHIS2 – As a business analyst
DHIS2 – As a 66 Hacker
DHIS2 – As a consultant / trainer / coordinator
DHIS2 – As a program manager
Can you make us little more clear where would you like to put yourself for finding solution of proposed pretty use case generated in trail email based on your best findings / suggested option ?
I think you will get even better option / solution when you will put your self at best place to
look into the scenario. At lest, i think a solution architect can’t suggest to do a work around “hack” which is no way gone a be appreciated in DHIS2 Community.

And if your doing “hack” around DHIS2 than you should be more clear in your mind that you are doing wrong practice.

Thanks all - a MILLION apologies for gettting back to all of you this late!
I actually got some people to do this because i was preparing for a training and there were a THOUSAND other things competing for my attention.
Brajesh, great ideas start from all sorts of ways! The ideas presented by my fellow colleagues currently seem like/are HACKS but ftom a “DHIS2 - Core Developer’s view” they are ways to start an implementation for the “Official Recommended Options”!
We get to relieve people like Lars & others from doing smaller competing tasks to doing worrying about the BIGGER picture.
Otherwise thanks all for the shared options - i’m actually going to look at these hacky ideas and probably share something official…
