Unlocking Climate–Health Relationships with DHIS2

This presentation discusses the DHIS2 Climate App, introduced in 2024, from a user perspective of just curiosity to profound insight and excitement! We can finally advance research of climate impact on health in the most vulnerable regions of the world. ICAP has innovatively explored this in low- and middle-income countries, namely HIV electronic health record (EHR) data from ICAP-supported health facilities in Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. Key climate-related exposure data for granular-level geographic units, such as air temperature and precipitation, were examined with routine health services data including patient clinic visits and deaths. The presentation touches on our positive experiences with the DHIS2 Climate App, its functionality with DHIS2 Climate Tools (January 2026 release) and the Chap & Modeling Portal (November 2024 release) for modeling, and how limitations/challenges were addressed. The DHIS2 Climate App provides decades of historical data (e.g., ERA5) with org units that are already interoperable with DHIS2’s infrastructure. This allows users to merge climate data with health data although batch imports were necessary because only 50,000 records could be imported at one time and we needed millions. ICAP imported aggregated, health facility-level patient metrics from the HIV EHR datasets for Côte d’Ivoire (n=46 sites; n=49,692 patients enrolled between 2017 and 2022) and Mozambique (n=9 sites; n= 272,183 patients enrolled between 2015 and 2025). Data Visualizer was used to examine the potential relationships between weekly visits/deaths and precipitation/air temperature, and our next steps will be to leverage the new modeling capabilities with DHIS2 Climate Tools within the Chap & Modeling Portal. The app has strategically broadened our analytical and visualization capabilities. Thumbs up to the DHIS2 Climate App!
