Transforming Child Health with DHIS2 in Mozambique

In Mozambique, child health data is traditionally collected on paper registries at health facilities, consolidated at the district level, and later entered into DHIS2 as aggregated reports. This manual process introduces delays, data loss, quality issues, and inefficiencies, limiting the timely use of data for decision-making. The Electronic Child Registry (ECR) is a customized DHIS2 Tracker-based solution designed to address these challenges by enabling individualized child health tracking across multiple services, including immunization, nutrition, sick child consultations, and at-risk child monitoring. The ECR is deployed in 25 health facilities and used via tablets during both facility-based care and outreach activities such as mobile brigades. By digitizing child health records at the point of care, the ECR improves data accuracy, timeliness, and usability, allowing health workers to track children’s health status in real-time. Additionally, its design enhances follow-ups on missed vaccinations and consultations, reducing dropouts and strengthening service continuity. Although still in the pilot phase, the ECR has already registered over 68,000 children, demonstrating its potential to streamline service delivery, reduce administrative burdens, and improve health outcomes. A key focus is its future integration with existing health systems (e.g., DHIS2, SELV, CRVS) and leveraging advanced analytics and AI for predictive insights to further enhance decision-making. This presentation will share early results, lessons learned, and challenges, providing valuable insights for countries seeking to digitize child health registries. The ECR’s experience underscores the importance of interoperability, stakeholder engagement, and data-driven decision-making in strengthening health systems and ensuring equitable child health services.
