Strengthening HIV Program Reporting and Data Use
The National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe (NAC) coordinates HIV prevention efforts across the country, with accurate and timely data playing a key role in program success. The DHIS2 platform serves as the primary data repository for community-based HIV interventions, such as program enrollments, HIV testing referrals, antiretroviral treatment, and more. In Harare Districts, DHIS2 is used to enhance data collection and reporting, supporting four HIV prevention programs with 352 community cadres. This initiative digitized previously paper-based tools and registers, allowing data to be captured on tablets and synchronized to a central cloud server for real-time monitoring and decision-making. The objective of this project was to assess the impact of DHIS2 on reporting accuracy, data visualization, and decision-making in community HIV interventions. Results over a 12-month period showed significant improvements: reporting completeness increased from 50% to 94%, timeliness improved by 55%, and data utilization enabled targeted interventions that led to increased uptake of PrEP, condom use, HIV testing, and treatment adherence, particularly among adolescents. Community cadres reported greater confidence in using digital tools, leading to more accurate data entry. Training workshops also enhanced data quality and analysis skills for district officers. The integration of DHIS2 has enhanced data quality, reporting, and decision-making in community HIV programs in Harare. This approach demonstrates the value of digital health tools for evidence-based HIV programming and differentiated service delivery, suggesting that expanding the use of DHIS2 could further strengthen HIV prevention efforts .
