Speeding up the GIS page

The GIS page is quite heavy (more than 3.3 MB). I have started analyzing how to improve this here:

The application does not wait for the WMS to finish loading, so excluding it from the initial load won’t speed up anything. On the other hand, people on very slow connections may find a half-finished background annoying.

Should I disable it as default or not?

HI there. I think it should be optional. Often times here, the
internet simply does not work. We should not necessarily assume that
everyone will always have a speedy internet connection to get a WMS
image, that after all, is simply decoration. Having the ability to set
what the background layer is (metacarta, a local WMS layer) would be a
better option.

Jason

HI there. I think it should be optional.

It is already optional, in the tree structure on the right hand side one can uncheck the Backgrounds | World WMS checkbox.

But yes, I think it should be unchecked by default, and then the folder should be expanded, so people can readily see that they can bring in a background image by one click.

We should probably add this plugin to the Maven build:

http://alchim.sourceforge.net/yuicompressor-maven-plugin/index.html
