Optimizing DHIS2 for Triple Vaccine Introduction
Chad faces significant challenges in health data management, such as transmission delays and data inconsistencies. Although DHIS2 was implemented in 2021 to improve the system, further optimization is required. The introduction of three new vaccines in October 2024—R21 for malaria, PCV13 for respiratory diseases, and Rota for rotavirus diarrhea—has added complexity. This study evaluates DHIS2’s impact on vaccination data management. DHIS2 was used to monitor the vaccine rollout, with a dashboard tracking progress at national and subnational levels. Data from October to December 2024 showed concerning trends in coverage: 117% for the first pneumococcal dose, dropping to 40% for the second and 12% for the third. For rotavirus, coverage was 90% for the first dose, 24% for the second, and 3% for the third. Malaria vaccine coverage was 111.17% for the first dose, 34.01% for the second, and 6.55% for the third. DHIS2’s tracking system helped identify missed doses and support follow-ups. Key barriers included inadequate DHIS2 proficiency, stockouts, and internet access issues. Corrective actions are being implemented, and the study concludes that further investment in DHIS2 training, vaccine supply chains, and infrastructure is necessary for optimizing vaccine coverage.
