Neotree-DHIS2 Link: Enhancing Data Accuracy
Introduction / Background Malawi is implementing the Malawi 2063 agenda to achieve a self-reliant, industrialized middle-income economy. A key enabler is human capital development, which includes ensuring proper neonatal care. Over 2,000 babies are born daily, and their data is recorded in nursery registers, later compiled into reports and entered into DHIS2. However, this manual process is prone to errors and delays. To address this, Neotree, a UK-based charity, developed the Neotree application, which supports clinical care while capturing neonatal data. Despite its benefits, data clerks manually extract and compile reports from printed Neotree notes, leading to transcription errors and inefficiencies. To solve this, Neotree collaborated with Malawi’s Ministry of Health – Digital Health Division to automate report generation and integrate it into DHIS2/HMIS. Methodology The integration involved mapping Neotree data elements to those in the Maternity Monthly Report and ensuring data integrity through validation checks. Data was transferred from Neotree to DHIS2 via API, and validation was conducted to ensure accuracy. Results The integration was successful, enabling automatic transfer of neonatal data to DHIS2/HMIS with error-free auto-calculated fields. Recommendations Currently, Neotree is deployed in a limited number of facilities in Malawi. Scaling up its implementation would enhance data accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making across more health facilities, improving neonatal healthcare outcomes.
