I have been in a training and the trainees (from different districts) felt that it would be a good idea if the message option somehow allows them to communicate across districts and not only limit them to their districts! They believe that it would be very great to ask questions across fellow Bio-statisticians, Records Officers and fellow staff!
I understand the Org-unit setup and hierarchy in the system however, food-for-thought!

All is possible, and this will depend on country need and way messaging should trigger. In Kenya, messaging is shared across the country. Once the district raise issue the message is first received by superuser and once response it is available to all district.

It’s a good idea though, it will depend of the topic of discusion. Looking at the previous message, it seems as-if you may need to have a moderator for the messages to be sent across districts due to the restriction on the hierarchy structures so that, one of the technical member in one of the groups to send message across the boundaries set and based on the limit restriction from the system that have been set.

Today’s function is slightly limited to support queries or other topics that the super users of the system may be good at answering or interested in. It would be interesting to hear if the current messaging system is used for health related information beyond support, and if this is at all desirable. There might be room for adding the possibility to submit health/programme related questions for specific areas such as pmtct, tb, malaria etc. It might also be useful for reporting information that doesn’t fit within the structure of datasets.
We have discussed the possibility to add the concept of channels, or topics, or discussion areas. Perhaps these would have to be added by superusers, or perhaps be free to be added by any user (similar to twitter).
Users (including health topic experts or just those more than average interested in a topic) could perhaps subscribe to the channel and get alerts for messages posted there, and the ability to respond, regardless of org unit structure. This could be an open forum available for all users, or restricted, or moderated.
Some users have also requested features where such a messaging system somehow gets linked to statistics… Not sure how at this point.
This may at some point get close to other messaging systems, so it is a valid question what should be part of dhis or be external. It would be interesting to hear views on this, and also about the usefulness of such functions.

From my point of view (dhis mobile), I am quite interested in this from the use we could see of the mobile phone in such a messaging function.

Great ideas you got…just getting scared that with such a full blown out feature…the users might start getting interested in the forum than the health-data-reporting / analysis!
Otherwise from the user training we had last week (in Uganda about 8districts & 3staff from each) the users felt like having the ability to communicate across districts / sites / facilities would be a great option. I foresee a scenario where a Bio-statistician in District-X finds it easier in requesting his fellow Bio-statistician in District-P a question and since the two are probably buddies the response would then be much faster and for me; these are 2 professionals exchanging knowledge and sharing best experiences. A situation where us (the techies) leave it to the professionals (read health experts) share on what they know best (health) and the techies developing an environment to ease their sharing - wow…
I think we can take it from this angle and the great options (Mobi-Lars) suggests will obviously start falling into shape one at a time without availing the fully blown out feature.
