The Ministry of Health in South Sudan is mandated to ensure that all citizens attain optimal health and contribute productively to national development. Fulfilling this mandate requires a comprehensive health system that includes strategic planning, harmonized data management, and timely service delivery interventions especially for vulnerable and underserved communities.
One such intervention is the Boma Health Initiative (BHI), a community-based program implemented at the lowest administrative unit (Boma level). BHI aims to promote integrated health promotion and disease prevention services through volunteer home health promoters, reaching even the most remote populations.
To support this initiative, a digital system has been developed and strengthened through DHIS2, which offers a flexible, open-source digital infrastructure to support data collection, analysis, and visualization across all levels of the health system. DHIS2 empowers BHI by enabling community-level data collection both online and offline, with seamless synchronization to the national Health Information System (HIS).
The digital tool also integrates unique features tailored to the needs of frontline Boma Health Workers. These include pictorial job aids to support understanding, treatment guidance for maternal and child health, and stock management functionalities to ensure the availability of essential commodities.
These innovations not only improve data flow but also enhance the quality of care delivered at the community level, bridging the gap between community-based health actions and national health strategies through real-time, data-driven insights.
