The HISP Centre at University of Oslo and the global HISP network are currently working to help countries respond to the spread of mpox (formerly known as “monkeypox”). Mpox has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by WHO due to the growing number of cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring countries in Africa, as well as reports of cases in Europe and Asia that have raised concerns of a global outbreak of the disease.
HISP groups are already working to help Ministries of Health leverage existing DHIS2 systems for effective mpox surveillance and response, and to support mpox vaccination campaigns. For example, HISP groups in Uganda and Rwanda are supporting integration of mpox into existing DHIS2 systems for Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response and Case-Based Surveillance, while in the DRC, the local HISP group is helping the MoH deploy a DHIS2-based Electronic Immunization Registry (EIR) to support mpox cluster vaccination activities.
The HISP Centre is working with subject matter experts at WHO and Gavi to design an mpox update to existing DHIS2 IDSR and CBS toolkits that is aligned with best practices and reporting standards, based on interim guidance from WHO. This module will cover both aggregate and Tracker-based programs, and support integrating mpox surveillance and vaccination into existing systems. These tools and guidance will be shared on our website and announced on the Community of Practice as soon as they are available.
