It’s inspiring to witness how the Ministry of Health of Rwanda, in collaboration with HISP Rwanda, has harnessed the power of DHIS2 to address public health challenges through locally adapted digital solutions.
Towards the end of 2024, Rwanda experienced a rise in malaria cases. In response, the government quickly rolled out a set of interventions, one of the most impactful being the shift from aggregated malaria case reporting at health facilities to individual case tracking at the community level, using a customized DHIS2 Tracker.
Thanks to this shift:
- Every confirmed malaria case, whether diagnosed by a community health worker or at a health facility, can now be tracked individually.
- Index testing and contact tracing have become more streamlined and efficient.
- Follow-up actions are quicker, improving case management and the overall response.
This enhanced surveillance system, combined with other strategic public health measures, has already contributed to a decline in malaria incidence during the early months of 2025.
Kudos to all the teams involved for leveraging DHIS2 and digital health tools to strengthen Rwanda’s health system and protect lives!
