Leveraging DHIS2 for Enhanced Malaria Elimination Strategies in Zimbabwe: Harnessing Climate, Environmental, and Health Data Integration

The DHIS2 platform serves as a repository for key malaria surveillance data in Zimbabwe which includes malaria case data, such as suspected cases, testing rates, positivity rates, treatment outcomes, and deaths. This abstract focuses on the potential of leveraging the DHIS2 platform to enhance malaria surveillance in Zimbabwe through the integration of malaria cases, vector control, climatic and environmental data. This real time data availability facilitates the monitoring of disease burden and trends, enabling the identification of high risk areas and the evaluation of intervention effectiveness. The integration of these data within DHIS2 supports evidence based decision making, early warning, and early detection mechanism to avert outbreaks. These data support the efficient allocation of resources and timely response to malaria outbreaks should they occur. The enhanced malaria surveillance repository (CBS) includes data on vector control measures such as indoor residual spraying (IRS). The integration of IRS data, including bioassays, into DHIS2 allows for the monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of indoor vector control interventions. Entomological data which includes geo coordinates of breeding sites from adult mosquito collections and larval sampling activities enhances vector surveillance efforts by providing valuable information on vector distribution, breeding habitats, and insecticide resistance patterns. The inclusion of molecular analysis results from laboratories in DHIS2 enhances the understanding of vector populations and their genetic characteristics, aiding in the development of targeted interventions. Moreover, DHIS2 is being used for malaria case classification and investigations, providing a comprehensive understanding of disease transmission dynamics in the elimination districts. By capturing detailed epidemiological data, including travel history and local transmission patterns, DHIS2 supports the identification of transmission hotspots, introduction routes, and potential intervention gaps. These insights contribute to the development of tailored elimination strategies and the optimization of surveillance and control efforts. Leveraging on the malaria related data already available in DHIS2 for enhanced malaria surveillance in Zimbabwe through the integration of climatic (rainfall and land surface temperature) the National Malaria Control Program was able to avert possible high malaria cases in Binga district. Integrating climatic and environmental data into DHIS2’s climatic module enables effective monitoring, evaluation, and analysis of malaria data. This facilitates evidence based decision making, targeted interventions, and optimal resource allocation, advancing Zimbabwe’s goal of malaria control and
