Internet Speed

Dear All,

Please what will you recommend as minimum internet speed for most users(download and upload) for online deployments of dhis2 . I would appreciate experiences from developing countries.

Thank you.

Hello Adedapo,

We, Kenya, use wireless modem which called 3G+ (HSPA) and 3G (EDGE) and serviced by best effort. This means 7.2 Mbps (HSPA)or 384Kbps (EDGE) maximum speed. Usual speed is not so high even 3G+ area, like 100 Kbps or 200Kbps. When we went to lower speed area (EDGE), it is hard to use GIS capability, but there are no problem on other area like as data entry. This EDGE supposed to be 40 Kbps or around for average.

Hope this help you.

Thanks Suzuki for sharing the Kenyan experience. We also plan to use Gsm modems which are largely branded as HSPA modems. However only about 5% of the coverage is 3G largely in the urban areas while most of the districts only have Edge/Gprs coverage with speeds hovering around 20kpbs. It is good to hear you had no issues with data entry within Edge coverage areas. ISPs are largely outsourced and we seem to get only what trickles down after all the routing Jason explained.

I guess I should clarify my response a bit as I was really thinking more about server bandwidth than client bandwidth.

Client bandwidth of course matters (a lot), and I think out experience is largely the same as the Kenya experience, with internet speeds hovering around 20 kpbs as well in the field, which is fine for data entry, but not appropriate for administration/GIS/reports. I think that my line (64kBps) is probably really the minimum of what would be appropriate for all features of the system to be accessible. I rarely have problems here in Zambia nowadays since the switch over to fiber, but before that, it was very difficult to perform administrative tasks on the machine remotely over a SSH connection, due to high latency and funky QoS rules of the ISP. I would say for these types of administrative functions, you should ideally have either a fast, uncontested VSAT connection or a DSL line, otherwise, you are really going to suffer.

Regards,

Jason
