Interested in DHIS 2

Hi John and Faith,
You do not necessarily need a developer to get DHIS2 setup. You can download the program your self, and we have attempted to create comprehensive documentation to allow you to setup the system your self. Perhaps the easiest way at the moment to create your own instance is with the dhis2-docker project here (https://github.com/pgracio/dhis2-docker) .

In many cases, it may be useful to engage of on the members of our experts community (https://www.dhis2.org/expert-community) to assist you with your implementation, but it is by no means a requirement. Generally, not “anyone” can do it, but it helps if you have a person who knows SQL and are comfortable working with data formats like JSON and XML. Knowing a scripting language like Python or NodeJS may be required for more complex setups.

To answer your question about a demo that does not reset at night, the answer is no, not that I know of. In general, it would be better that you establish such a system yourself.

Generally, inquiries should be directed to our users list

https://launchpad.net/~dhis2-users

which is also searchable here

http://dhis2.github.io/dhis2-docs/

Hope this helps to get you started and feel free to become a part of the community.

Regards,

Jason

Hello,

Thanks John. We are very interested in using DHIS2 to track the impact of our existing enterprise in Haiti as well as future enterprises.

We have developed the metrics that we are interested in tracking, but have had a difficult time finding a program that allows us to

  1. collect data via sms, web and app,
  1. create relationships between data tables, and
  1. analyze and visualize that data on a dashboard.

DHIS2 appears to offer all three capabilities. I’ve taken a look at the installation instructions on github, do you also have a simple guide for DHIS2 setup?

Thank you,

Faith

Hello,

The organization I work for is very interested in using DHIS 2 and we had a few questions.

We would like to know what exactly we need to set up the platform.

If we need a developer to implement the platform or if anyone can do it?

And we would like to know if there is a demo site that we can work on that doesn’t refresh every day?

Thank you,

John

Hello,

Just to add to Jason’s reply: There is considerable difference between working with the system on your laptop (which is pretty easy) and setting it up on a web server for access across the net. Attached are some slides on how to get it working on Windows.

We also offer regional training workshops https://www.dhis2.org/academy and are about to launch an online version, which will probably be useful for learning the ropes. There are lots of videos already on YouTube, but some of them are a bit long-winded and dated.

The user mailing list that Jason pointed to is the best option for targeted technical questions.

I can maybe add further to Knut and Jason’s advice. Setting up dhis2 a critical piece of web based infrastructure which remote users can rely on to be available, secure, well tuned etc does imply a range of infrastructural skills related to things like networking and linux system administration (not to mention infrastructure) which are not always immediately at hand.

It is (relatively) easy to get up and running. But to provide and maintain a production level of service is more effort which needs to be planned for. It might imply internal capacity development, outsourcing or some measure of in between. Organisations have varied in their approaches depending on their constraints and ambitions. (Of course it might be that you are already sitting with the required infrastructure and labour and just need the installation instructions)

Many places have found the dhis2-tools (described in Ch 20 of implementation guide http://dhis2.github.io/dhis2-docs/2.21/en/implementer/html/ch20.html) a useful collection of scripts to structure and maintain their systems - and automate some of the more complex installation steps in the manual.

Hi John and Faith,

Akros hosts a test server that we make available to students and partners for experimenting, etc., and I would be happy to make it available to you. It closely resembles the test instance on the dhis2.org site, but it does not reset as frequently. Please contact me directly and I will get you set up with a user id and password.
