Implementation research for Digital Registries

We are conducting implementation research on digital health registries in Rwanda, Uganda, and Ethiopia to enhance healthcare delivery. • Rwanda: The “One child – one registry” initiative improves childhood immunization and nutrition tracking. • Uganda: An eRegistry supports the transition to eight antenatal care (ANC) visits, aligned with WHO guidelines and an effectiveness trial. • Ethiopia: Digital tools aid early prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in urban pregnant women, focusing on diet, physical activity, and air pollution. Using implementation science frameworks like iPARIHS and COM-B, we assess barriers and facilitators before deployment, co-design facilitation strategies, and conduct process evaluations 3–6 months post-implementation, with the aim to integrate digital health registries in ANC and PNC. Common challenges across the three countries include low digital literacy among health workers, insufficient training, and limited technical functionalities in digital systems. Data quality varies across facilities and indicators. Support networks, such as WhatsApp troubleshooting groups, have proven effective in assisting health workers. We will assess implementation outcomes in terms of fidelity, feasibility, and acceptability based on Proctor’s framework for outcome assessment of implementations.
