Empowering Health Officials: DHIS2 & Immunization
Subnational health officials require near real-time data to guide critical programmatic decisions. However, surveys are infrequent, resource-intensive, and often lack the granularity needed for local decision-making. The most timely subnational data comes from monthly routine health facility reporting through DHIS2. This study demonstrates how DHIS2 can be leveraged to provide actionable insights for decision-makers at all administrative levels. Following a data quality assessment and adjustment at the facility level, we developed analytical products tailored to national, regional, district and health facility officials in Uganda. These included high-quality analytics and data visualizations, providing annual and monthly insights at the national, regional (n=15) and district (n=146) levels, along with detailed, granular data at the health facility level (n=4,886). The analysis identified districts and health facilities with persistent declines in immunization services, as well as those showing intermittent declines or consistent improvements. Additionally, monthly-level analysis enabled timely identification of districts and facilities needing corrective action. These findings provided a valuable starting point for engagement with immunization staff and service providers to explore underlying factors influencing service delivery. This led to opportunities for knowledge-sharing, evidence-based discussions and feedback loops between health facility staff and national, regional, and district Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) officers. The granularity and timeliness of the data, spanning the entire country, were made possible only through the DHIS2 platform. To date, no other data source in Uganda offers such a comprehensive, timely, and granular view of immunization service delivery. This highlights the invaluable role of DHIS2 in providing real-time, detailed data for local planning and the monitoring of immunization programs.
