DHIS2 enabling personal health records in Maldives

The Maldives has made remarkable progress in leveraging DHIS2 based solutions to strengthen public health outcomes. The nationwide launch of the Electronic Immunization Registry in 2022 marked a significant milestone, enabling digital tracking of vaccination. Its expansion now includes child growth monitoring, developmental milestones, and tracking vitamin A supplementation and deworming features, with automated SMS reminders for vaccinations and growth monitoring. This expansion ensures that every child born from January 1, 2025, will have a longitudinal, digital health record, fostering comprehensive child health management. In addition, the Primary Health Care (PHC) Registry for non communicable diseases (NCDs) aims to establish baseline screenings for major NCDs and risk factors among adults by the end of 2025. This registry will provide valuable data for identifying at risk individuals and facilitating early intervention. Leveraging data from DHIS2, the Maldives’ public portal represents a milestone in the country’s digital health journey. The portal offers access to child health records, including digital vaccination certificates, growth charts, and developmental milestones, as well as primary health care records for adults enrolled in the PHC Registry. Integrated with eFaas, the national digital identity system, it ensures secure and efficient access to health data. Plans are in place to integrate eFaas further with DHIS2 to enhance security and ease of access for healthcare workers. These initiatives, supported by the Ministry of Health and UN agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, and UNFPA, have enhanced the scalability and security of the DHIS2 platform. The Maldives’ efforts highlight how DHIS2 can transform health systems by enabling secure, scalable, and sustainable public health management, improving health outcomes, and empowering citizens to monitor their health across various life stages.
