DHIS 2 version 2.4 released

Hi all,

we have released DHIS 2 version 2.4. The news this time:

- Offline data entry: The data entry module - if opened when online -
is operational even without Internet connectivity. Data can be entered
and stored locally while being offline and uploaded to the central
server when online. This means that the online deployment strategy
will be more viable in areas with unstable Internet connectivity. The
total bandwidth usage is greatly reduced since forms no longer are
retrieved from the server for each rendering. For more info on this
feature, read the archive:
https://lists.launchpad.net/dhis2-users/msg00468.html

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-dataentry/index.action

- New Symbol layer in GIS: Data can be visualized as symbols rather
than colors. The menu system has been improved to allow more space for
the map itself and to emphasize the opportunity to load maps into
separate layers to produce more advanced map views.

http://apps.dhis2.org/demo/dhis-web-mapping/index.action

- Improved data mart performance: Now scalable on the number of CPU
cores providing a near-linear performance boosts as new cores are
added - for instance the processing time for our benchmark database on
a quad-core processor was reduced to close to 1/4.

- Modal dialogs: All popups in the system have been replaced by modal
dialogs - this has proved to be less confusing to inexperienced users.

- Conversations: The messaging system is now organized around
conversations, making it easy to see the full history of an
interaction between a super-user and an end-user for instance.

Hi Lars and Team,

Congratulations to you all for this wonderful job. We really appreciate your continued effort at making DHIS 2 better by the day.

I would like to draw your attention to the Data Entry Form Management Module. The module seems broken in DHIS2 version 2.4.

When you click on the 'Design data entry form ’ button on the Dataset management screen in order to open and edit an existing customized data entry form, or to create a new customized data entry form for a dataset you have just created, you see the following:

  1. The existing data entry form does not appear.

  2. A re-sizable blank box titled ‘Design data entry form’ appears on the screen but no CKEditor controls for designing the form.

  3. An empty selection box is displayed. The box is not populated with either the Data elements nor Indicators associated with the dataset

Waiting to hear from you soon.

John.

Hi John,
I am running 2.4 and have no issues with the custom data entry form
modules, including editing of forms which were created in previous
versions.
What browser are you using? Be sure you are using the absolute latest
version of Firefox or Chrome.

If this does not work, please post some logs and this might help to
diagnose what is happening.

Hi John,

Just to be sure, please try the following:

  1. clear cache through Tools->Clear Recent History

  2. delete local-storage through Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Network
and clear offline storage from there.

If the problem still persists, please try this to REALLY clean your

cache:

  1. Clear all history (click all the checkboxes)

  2. Go into options, and click the privacy tab

  3. Change to “Use custom settings for history”

  4. Choose clear history when firefox closes

  5. Go into settings for this… and click all the checkboxes

  6. Close the browser

  7. When it now starts, everything should be cleared

Hi Jason,

Sorry for getting back a bit late on this; got caught up with some office work.

It seems I'm in much more trouble than I initially thought.
After clearing my browser cache as instructed, I tried again and still there was no success. I then decided opening the database using previous versions of DHIS2 (which luckily for me I keep in my archives for sometime before discarding).
To my surprise, DHIS2 version 2.3 also behaved the same way - the data entry forms and the dataelements/indicators selection box came up empty.
But with DHIS2 version 2.2, the data entry forms and the dataelements/indicators selection box open and populated as expected.

I have attached the screenshots and the corresponding server logs from both versions 2.2 and 2.4. I included the version of Chrome I'm using on screenshot 2.
My BP has started going up  and so any help to resolve this would be really appreciated.

Thank you.
John.

we have released DHIS 2 version 2.4.

The

- New Symbol layer in GIS: Data can be visualized as symbols rather
than colors. The menu system has been improved to allow more space for
the map itself and to emphasize the opportunity to load maps into
separate layers to produce more advanced map views.

DHIS2 App Hub

- Improved data mart performance: Now scalable on the number of CPU
cores providing a near-linear performance boosts as new cores are
added - for instance the processing time for our benchmark database on
a quad-core processor was reduced to close to 1/4.

- Modal dialogs: All popups in the system have been replaced by modal
dialogs - this has proved to be less confusing to inexperienced users.

- Conversations: The messaging system is now organized around
conversations, making it easy to see the full history of an
interaction between a super-user and an end-user for instance.

Hi John,

It seems the screenshots did not come through.

Can you try a couple of different browsers?

Hi Jason,

Sorry for getting back a bit late on this; got caught up with some office work.

It seems I’m in much more trouble than I initially thought.

I included the version of Chrome I’m using on screenshot 2.

My BP has started going up  and so any help to resolve this would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

John.

This is the same version of Chrome I am using (on Windows 7) so it

should work.

Have you cleared your browser cache (totally)?

How about server logs? Any exceptions there?

Any Messages from Firebug or Chrome developer tools?

Hi Lars and Team,

Congratulations to you all for this wonderful job. We really appreciate

your

I would like to draw your attention to the Data Entry Form Management

Module. The module seems broken in DHIS2 version 2.4.

When you click on the ‘Design data entry form’ button on the Dataset

management screen in order to open and edit an existing customized data

entry form, or to create a new customized data entry form for a dataset

you

have just created, you see the following:

  1. The existing data entry form does not appear.

Hi,
I'm having some trouble with data entry after updating the Ghana database to 2.4. The data entry forms just doesn't load. The progress indicator keeps "running", but nothing happens. Checked the "local storage" in the browser, and it seems only the org unit hierarchy is downloaded, but there is no data on data entry forms. Tried with latest Chrome, Safari and Firefox on Mac, Chrome on Win XP.

Any advice or similar experiences?

Thanks,
Olav

Is it possible to get access to this database online? If so, I can try
and see whats wrong. It has been mainly tested with the Kenya
database, and Sierra Leone.

I did experience this during the initial upgrade, but seemed to be a
browser issue. Be sure to clean your cache really well. Be sure to use
the latest version of Chrome and FireFox. Knut has sent some detailed
messages in this thread about how to do this.

If not, you need to see what is going on within the server (logs) and
or browser (Firebug, Chrome developer tools).

Another issue which I have experienced this week in Nigeria with 2.4
is that if a proxy is not configured properly, this sort of behavior
may be observed. It seems that some proxy setups will cache the old
Javascript and even if you clean out the cache, the proxy will serve
up the old stuff. I had to get the system administrator to make an
exception to our server, so that the browser could communicate
directly with the server. Not sure about your setup, but it is one
more thing to consider.
