DHIS 2 version 2.4 BETA available

Hi all,

we have made a preview of DHIS version 2.4 available here:

http://demo.dhis2.org

Username and password is admin/district. You can download the WAR file
from here:

http://dhis2.org/download/dhis-2.4-beta.war

There are two features we would like to get feedback on in particular:

1. Offline data entry:

Data can now be entered while being disconnected from the Internet.
You need to be online while logging onto the data entry module - the
very first time this will take a few extra seconds (7+ depending on
the connection) since all meta-data are downloaded and stored in your
browser in the background. Its cool, try it out yourself:

- Open the data entry module, select an organisation unit, data set
and period. Punch in a few data values. (Use your local IP address if
testing locally.)

- Disconnect yourself from the Internet. Notice how the system detects
your offline status and displays a notification.

- See how everything works as before: You can continue to expand,
collapse and select organisation units from the tree. You can select
data sets and periods. Forms are loaded as usual. You can continue to
enter data values and mark data sets as complete for as long as you
want.

- Re-connect to the Internet. See the notification from the system
explaining that you have locally stored data, and click "upload" to
send the data to the server. If you have been disconnected long enough
for the session to time out you will be asked to log in again (without
leaving the page).

o Nice additional benefits are that everything is a lot more
responsive and that bandwidth usage is greatly reduced as most data is
now loaded locally.

o There are currently a few limitations in offline mode: Data values,
completeness registrations and min-max values on the server are not
displayed in the forms and the validation and history functions are
disabled.

o Firefox will ask for your permission for DHIS 2 to store data
locally, please allow this.

All this hopefully has the potential to make the online deployment
strategy, with all its benefits, feasible for areas with patchy
Internet connectivity and power supply. Given a latop or generator,
this means that record officers can continue their data entry work
throughout the day even if Internet connectivity or power supply have
gone down temporarily. Using the myDatamart tool she can also do
offline data analysis.

2. GIS symbol layer:

1. The menu system has had an overhaul: The left-side menu is gone and
the layer and map-view information has been put on the top bar to make
it more accessible and give more space for the map itself. Information
about the current selection for each layer is displayed in the
right-side menu. Map-views can be loaded into specific layers, making
it possible to load different map-views into multiple layers at the
same time.

2. A new "Symbol layer" is available. (Sorry for the confusion - the
current symbol layer has been renamed to "Facility layer".) This makes
it possible to do thematic mapping where images/symbols represent the
values rather than colors. One use case for this is displaying weather
data relevant for Malaria outbreak monitoring on the maps - think
weather forecast with suns and rain clouds.

- Define symbols/images as regular "Predefined legend sets", make sure
you select "Image" as symbolizer rather than "Color" (we will add more
symbols later).

- Open "Symbol layer" from the top bar, layer section (4th icon from
the left). Select indicator, period and organisation units as usual.
Select your preferred legend set and click "Update".

We are hoping for your participation and feedback. The final 2.4
release will be on Friday 26.

best regards,

the DHIS 2 development team

Thanks Lars I will provide feedback in the course of the day. I now in DHIS training assisting beside leave.

Hi Suzuki,

many thanks for the testing and feedback.

Thanks Lars,

This is correct, and might be something we improve on in the coming releases.

Once you shut down the browser before uploading the offline updated data,
then you will lose these data."

This is not correct... the data is stored in your browsers local
storage and remains there unless you clear it explicitly in the
browser. Tested this here to confirm. Please test again, and if giving
problems send me more info about your environment.

I total Agree with you Suzuki . On area of GIS Some of the issues noted on Demo on offline DHIS 2.4 Beta and current version DHIS 2.3:-

  1. if one use Symbol layer edit icon at the top of the Map the symbol layer dialogue box appear. check under legend option - legend set and update is disable
  2. In the map layers if one check box of both facility and symbol layer or one of them the feature data is not shown hence After removing symbol layer and facility layer then recovered.
  3. Also The change of symbol Icon for facility layer could be useful when one use in creating Health facility Decalogue representing the kind of services offered in any facility like ambulatory service, ??? Is there international standard symbol which could represent a health service and other organization structures.
  4. Under dashboard on ANC dropout rate example seen require baseline and target so that one can be viewing if a orgunit is operating below the baseline or between the baseline and target or above the target.
  5. There is need to include commutative target which use either population.
  6. X-axis and Y-Axis require to include the title e.g x-axis can be orgunit name, period etc while Y-Axis can be proportion %, Number etc. The current dashboard or charts are misleading due to the labelling because title alone can qualify the data interpretation either it is number of proportion.
    See attached for additional proposal.

I’m very curious, this caching functionality using HTML5 - are you using client-side XML for orgunits, elements, etc? I assume that is how the system continues to operate in ‘offline’ mode?

Hi Greg, thank you for your comments.

I'm very curious, this caching functionality using HTML5 - are you using
client-side XML for orgunits, elements, etc? I assume that is how the system
continues to operate in 'offline' mode?

This technique is a separate W3 spec still in draft but implemented in
most modern browsers called "web storage". It allows data to be
locally stored as plain key/value pairs. How you parse that text is up
to you - we are parsing it as JSON. Nice articles here:

Lars

I am a bit stuck. I'm hitting an issue where I keep seeing the
message "you are offline" when I am not offline. And I can't select
any datasets or periods. Clearing cache, restarting my browser is not
helping. any ideas?

helping. any ideas?

Hi Bob, what browser, version and OS? Locally or demo?

Sorry firefox 3.20. ubuntu 10.04.

Currently seeing the same on both local and demo. Probably I need to
update my browser for latest offline storage features ..

Its working now. After clearing all my history. Trying to retrace my
steps to reproduce this. It got stuck in a state where it remained
convinced I was offline, yet hadn't yet downloaded the metadata.

It should in theory work on 3.6, but it has not been tested.. it will
be today  hopefully these bugs will be squashed.

Yes, it will not work on that browser version. You need firefox 3.5 or
newer (or chrome....)

Seems to be if you (i) connect to dhis, (ii) open the dataentry page,
then (iii) disconnect (I disable my ethernet connection) without first
agreeing to let data be stored locally, the browser gets left in a
confused state it can't escape from without clearing all history.

Bob,

Offline should now work in Firefox 3.6 (just pushet a fix), could you
try it out? (you need to compile source, no war for this yet)
