To combat hunger and promote sustainable nutrition, a joint initiative was launched by HISP Tanzania and Ethiopia, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the University of Oslo, and the Ministries of Health in Somalia and Ethiopia. This project, aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 by 2030, specifically targets migratory cross-border communities, which often struggle with malnutrition.
By focusing on vulnerable populations such as children under five, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, the initiative seeks to address the pressing issue of nutritional deficiencies in these regions. The ultimate goal is to improve nutrition outcomes by enhancing access to essential tracking services and healthcare.
The project began with a thorough baseline assessment to understand the current state of service provision among pastoral populations. This information informed the development of a DHIS2-based pastoralist nutrition tracker, designed by HISP Tanzania. This innovative system allows for both online and offline tracking via web and mobile platforms, enabling cross-border monitoring of nutrition for the target populations.
Key features of the tracker include:
-
Unique client identification and historical record maintenance
-
Comprehensive client profiles
-
Automated MUAC categorization based on age, height, and weight
-
Real-time flagging of necessary interventions
-
Continuity of healthcare services as communities move across borders
This initiative is poised to make a significant impact in improving nutrition outcomes for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
