Community Story: How a Youth Forum in Mgbala Agwa, Nigeria, tackled HIV/AIDS in 2001

OUR STORY: I returned home in 2001 and something felt deeply wrong. Our community was losing young people fast, and no one understood why.
After visiting families and listening closely, I realised the truth. HIV had reached Mgbala Agwa, and fear was spreading faster than information.
Many people dismissed my warnings. Some mocked me, others insisted it was something else entirely.
So I turned to the youth. We formed the Mgbala Agwa Youth Forum and searched for real knowledge we could trust.
I reached out through a UN-supported online volunteer platform and asked for educational materials. Within weeks, more than six hundred resources arrived.
Those books changed everything. Young people read them, shared them at home, and started conversations that once felt impossible.
Teen pregnancies dropped. Families asked real questions. Students from nearby towns came to learn.
That small library inside our primary health center became the heartbeat of hope. It connected us to volunteers around the world who supported us through emails, designs, and guidance.
From there, we grew. We registered a national organization, expanded programs, referred people for treatment, and kept educating.
One CD showing the clinical progression of HIV shook people awake. Behavior shifted. Silence broke.
Global evaluators visited in 2003 and their report opened even more doors. But the core truth remained.
We didn’t wait for perfect conditions. We started with what we had and kept going.
A simple library redirected the future of an entire community.
This story still reminds me what happens when a community chooses courage over fear, learning over rumor, and connection over silence.
That choice saved lives. And it continues to shape Mgbala Agwa today
