Commemorating a Landmark in Lao PDR's Digital Health Transformation: The Electronic Immunisation Registry

Lao PDR is marking a significant achievement in its public health journey: one year of successful operation of the Electronic Immunisation Registration System (EIR). This system transforms the collection and management of vaccination data, ensuring comprehensive tracking for every child.

An event on May 6th, 2025, attended by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bounfeng Phommalaysith, the Ambassador of Japan to Laos, representatives from UNICEF and WHO, and other distinguished guests celebrated this milestone.

HISP Vietnam takes considerable pride in our role supporting the Ministry of Health by strengthening and optimising the DHIS2 system since its introduction in 2013 for various health indicators collection. The EIR leverages this robust platform, streamlining processes for healthcare staff and enhancing the efficiency of information recording and reporting.

The crucial benefits observed over the past year underscore the impact of this digital transformation:

  • Substantial reduction in paper-based documentation and associated inefficiencies.
  • Decreased workload for healthcare workers.
  • Enhanced precision in data recording and reporting, directly attributable to DHIS2’s capabilities.
  • Decreased operational costs, especially relates to paper forms and logbooks printing.
  • Minimised data errors, leading to higher quality data for informed decision-making.
  • Notable reduction in vaccination dropout rates, achieved by enabling health workers to meticulously track due and overdue doses, supported by semi-automated reminders to guardian’s mobile phone and improved follow-up capabilities.

This strategic digital progression, powered by DHIS2 and with the technical support from HISP Vietnam, is instrumental in transitioning Laos from a primarily health program-centric data system to a more integrated, patient-centric approach. This ensures every child is more effectively protected through precise and timely vaccination tracking, bolstering national immunisation coverage and health outcomes.
