Childhood Lead Exposure Monitoring with DHIS2

In Kenya, childhood Lead exposure remains a critical yet under-monitored health risk especially in urban poor areas where unsafe recycling of used Lead acid battery is commonly reported. Kenya, however, has a well-functioning primary healthcare network with community health promoters providing preventive healthcare at household level which is enhanced with a mother child health booklet for tracking the continuum of care from pregnancy to the first five year of life. Maternal child health services, implemented through home visits, community outreaches, and facility based child wellness clinics with linkage to care for sick children provides an ideal entry point for health counselling on Lead Poisoning prevention and point of care screening for elevated blood Lead levels. The concept proposed integration of routine BLL monitoring information within DHIS2 for addressing childhood lead exposure in Kenya. The approach will involve developing and deploying a DHIS2 module with core BLL indicators with initial pilot in high-risk counties.
