I have seen this in our system and suppose it comes from old dataValues, that
were loaded /entered before I added a new category into an existing
categoryCombination. The old values were still coded on the old
categoryOptionCombinations where the new category was missing.
I assume that DHIS2 does not delete obsolete categoryOptionCombinations, as long
as there are still dataValues linked to them.
Does that make sense, Lars?

Hi Sultan,
could you make sure that you do not have a category combination with only
the population category in your system?

Yes correct, that is a possibility.

we do not have any data related to the old category combinations. So we performed the maintenance selecting the “Update category option combinations” but still we see those orphan category option combinations. We have only one category combination(Age, location, dim) right now. Is there anything that we are missing here.
Thanks,
Sultan Ahamar.

I am pretty sure the function you reference does not remove old category combo options which are no longer valid. I think you will need to remove these directly in the database.
DId you try this? Obviously, after making a backup copy!
