Webinar on DHIS2 AEFI package: Q&A

From Lawrence Mukombo-WCO-South Sudan:
How is the app installed?

From Mutuda:
Does the system has validation checks for duplication’s?

Question: “Does the system has validation checks for duplications”
Reply: Yes, as the user attempts to register a new adverse event, a search is run in the background and presents the user with a possible match(es), before they proceed with registration

Yes, these data entry validation checks can be configured. The VPD surveillance system configuration has been updated with these checks in the last month as we have been finalizing CDC and WHO feedback which includes a rule for not allowing symptom onset date after reporting date or date of lab test for example.

The current data validations in AEFI include per WHO guidance:
For purposes of data validation and data quality, the following program rules have been configured according to WHO recommendations. If these conditions are met, the program is configured to trigger the action ‘Show warning upon complete’ to notify the data entry user of data quality errors:

  • If investigation planned date is before date of vaccination
  • If date of death is before date of onset (date AEFI started)
  • If date of notification is before date of vaccination
  • If date of onset is before date of vaccination
  • If date of reporting at national level is before date of reporting
  • If date of vaccination is before date of birth
  • If date of vaccination is before date of reconstitution

As Mike mentions we tend to include a minimum set of data validation rules and allow flexibility for countries to implement more and more restrictive validation rules depending on the data flows in country, whether or not retroactive data entry is being done in the system, whether most forms start first on paper then transferred to DHIS2 as a data repository (in which case adding too many rules can result in “lost” data if the paper source was not completed properly).

“Is it possible to have access to an development environment server to test with more details?” Yes, we will share the link for a demo environment at the end of the webinar. We can also set up a specific sandbox environment for countries that want to make changes.

Yes, all calculations are conducted by the system using program indicators and indicators. That is, the analytical outputs are calculated by the system based on the inputs (data entry).

The demo can be accessed here (login details provided on the landing page): https://who-demos.dhis2.org/tracker_demo for anyone to be able to test out the system.

Apologies if I missed it, but when will the digital package download for AEFI be available?

Thank you Rebecca.

Hi David – we aim to have downloadable package by end of next week and will post an update in the COP and on this channel. The package downloads will always be made available here: Metadata Package Downloads - DHIS2

Thank you Rebecca for the link.

Q: Can we modify the AEFI system under discussion to conform with mass vaccination campaign with multiple vaccination points besides the routine EPI centers?

The vaccine can be given at a temporary post. Does this mean we use the proxy facility where the vaccines came from?

Q: Please elaborate more on the next steps- operationalization process for getting it working in the country.

Q from Victoria Mesembe: Will all private facilities be included in the data base. vaccinated children can be taken there once unwell.

A: Yes it can, but this largely depends on how the country implements and data flows/reporting are implemented from private sector. Rwanda is a great example of how private sector vaccine data is integrated into the DHIS2-based HMIS.

Q from Sujeet: what about the access privileges at different level? How is it decided?

Q from Sujeet: Do the older version of DHIS2 need to be upgraded to incorporate AEFI tracker tool?
A: we support this metadata package from v 2.33 and later. We recommend to use version 2.33 at a minimum to take advantage of the functionality and latest performance improvements, but happy to discuss with countries on specific scenarios for integrating with an older version of DHIS2. Our general recommendation, however, will be to upgrade to at least v 2.33 (which is also the oldest version currently supported by UiO HISP in terms of backporting bug fixes, etc)

The opportunity for AEFI implementation training will be great. Please keep us posted.

Can data from the Med Safety App, which can be used by healthcare professionals and the public for AEFI reporting, as well as data from the Yellow Card Vaccine Monitor, be integrated with, or exported to, the DHIS2?

    • Integrated tracker environment: will eventually contain all the WHO tracker packages in an integrated demo environment
    • Log ins provided on the log in screen depending on program you want to view
