How we paired DHIS2 and OpenBoxes for nutrition logistics in Tajikistan

Hi all,

We wanted to share a project we’re proud of: with UNICEF and Tajikistan’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population, we built a nutrition-focused eLMIS that treats stock and treatment data as one record instead of two.

Some of the technical choices behind it:

  • DHIS2 is the source of truth for patient and treatment data, tracking a child’s story from admission to discharge under Tajikistan’s IMAM protocol.
  • OpenBoxes, an open source supply chain system, handles batch and lot tracking, warehouse stock, and distribution between facilities.
  • Every treatment episode is tied to the specific batch of commodities used, so recording a child’s treatment automatically deducts that quantity from facility stock.
  • Facility staff do all data entry through the DHIS2 Android App, built for offline use in areas without reliable connectivity, syncing once a signal is available.
  • Shipments are confirmed by scanning a QR code, stock follows FEFO rules, and an unsafe batch can be recalled and automatically blocked across every facility holding it.
  • Clinical safeguards are enforced directly in the workflow: a child with a defined complication triggers a mandatory hospital referral, and the system blocks further dispensing until that referral is recorded.
