Fwd: Launchpad: chat about changes to Blueprint

I would like to see something like a wiki or discussion board. The current whiteboard is really limited. Functionality similar to bug reports with capability for multiple comments would be a step forward.

Ability to link commits to blueprints would be useful as well.

Hi Lars

Biggest user … thats quite something!

Its interesting that dhis2-academy scores so highly. I wonder where
we sit with dhis2?

Looking through the academy blueprints I guess you are using this
primarily as a real-world-ish teaching tool which is great for
students. But where I guess it is quite different to “normal” use is
that there doesn’t seem to be a link with bugs in these projects. In
fact there is no one reporting bugs so your discussion with canonical
about merging bugs and blueprints could be interesting

But I guess you can use the muscle you have from academy being “the
biggest user” to advocate changes/feature requests which will be more
useful to dhis2 than dhis2-academy.

Merging functionality of bugs and blueprints will be interesting.
There are some things which fall somewhere in the grey area between
bug, issue and blueprint. I guess it will be useful to be able to
gracefully create a blueprint from a bug report.

My main input from dhis side to the merger plans is that they better
not bloody break anything!

I’d really like to have some way of exporting bugs/blueprints so that
we can migrate off launchpad should the occasion ever arise (I don’t
see it likely at present) or just to be able to maintain backup if
they decide to do some drastic type of overhaul (which is looking more
likely). Too much dependence on the cloud is a background worry.
Maybe you could raise this when you are on the call. Can they provide
some way for us to backup this data - preferably prior to them doing
merge like projects. Getting access to some kind of xml or sql dump
would be good.

Cheers
Bob

Hello Lars,

Did you know that dhis2-academy was the largest user of Launchpad’s
Blueprint app in the past year?

I’ve just pulled off a list of the 50 projects who made most use of
Blueprint in the past 365 days, and you come top.

We’re currently looking at how to move on with Blueprint and we’re
most likely to merge the Blueprint functionality with Launchpad’s bug
tracker.

As dhis2-academy is the biggest user of Blueprint, I’d love a chance
to chat to you – or someone else on the project – about how you use
it. Obviously we don’t want to make any changes that will destroy your
workflow.

Do you have time for a Skype call? I’d like to record the call so that
I can pass a transcript to my colleagues Jono Lange and Matthew Paul
Thomas, who will be planning the merger.

OK so we have:

  • Export to a standardish format.

  • Email notifications.

  • Improved discussion board.

Myself will suggest:

  • Way of defining the size/workload for a task (blueprint)

  • A auto-generated “roadmap view” for upcoming releases which shows large tasks only

I don’t really understand what “merging blueprints with bugtracker” implies but lets find out.

Maybe we could add types (task, new functionality, wild idea, improvement etc.) of blueprints as well, similar to issue types in e.g. Trac, but that might be out of scope for them, not sure

I suppose Trac only has tickets ("issues"), not bugs & blueprints, so
maybe that is what they mean by merging - but then having types would
be helpful. So rather than out of scope, it may be exactly what they
are trying to achieve?

Talked to Canonical dude, he was mostly interested in usage patterns of blueprints but I had the messages conveyed, lets wait and hope.
