Dear Knut,
I want to know if the dhis2-tool for Ubuntu 12.04 works on a
standalone server. I had tried it several times but it doesn't work.
Am i doing the wrong thing or is work only on virtual server like
Linode.
Please can you share with me your steps and dhis2-tools as i will like
to try the installation procedures again a standalone server.

You can certainly install on a “standalone server” depending how you define this … you do need an internet connection in order to download the required packages which can take an awful lot longer than a linode if your bandwidth is not great. But other than time, the process is the same.
It is possible to make an “extras” cdrom with all the packages downloaded in advance which I have used occasionally when travelling. Unfortunately I have to reread how to do this each time I do it
(If anyone is curious to do this (and document the steps) I basically start with a vanilla linode install, then install the dhis2-tools. Then bundle all the extra packages together on cdrom - reading on the internet each time how to make the repository package index. Rather than linode you could use any sort of virtual machine to do this as well. Knut, given your rate of travel this would be a useful approach you might look into.)

Thanks for the tip … though I do remember looking at this program but it is a GUI program which doesn’t help too much when you have a server installation without a GUI setup
As an aside, besides the security issues of installing lots of unnecessary stuff, I try to advise people not to do a full desktop installation, particularly in low bandwidth situations … keeping your packages up to date becomes much more bandwidth intensive when you have dozens of extra packages, many of which can be quite large. Best to try and keep mean and lean.
Making an iso image from installed packages “by hand” is really not very difficult … google dpkg-scanpackages will give you a few links.
