DHIS2 Tracker Capture Issue in mobile app - Reg

Dear Sir,

This is Chandrasekar from National Institute of Epidemiology from Chennai. We are installed DHIS2 application and customization in our local machine as per guideline. We have the issue on DHIS2 tracker capture module.

We are created tracker capture in DHIS2 application with these following things

  1. Create Data Set > Data Element (Domain Type - Tracker)

  2. Create Attribute from Programs/Attributes menu

  3. Select a Program Management > Tracker (Sample Data) > Assign Program to Organisational unit.

  4. We done the sample data Entry it has been saved in database. The data also showed in program summary report.

  5. We have downloaded latest DHIS2 tracker capture(Version 2.2) App from the google play store and installed in mobile.

Now we are trying to capture the data through mobile app with our local server IP address, username and password, but we can’t able access the meta data from the local machine.

Herewith we have attached the screenshots for your reference.

Please guide us to solve this issue. We are waiting for your reply.

Try to verify if your firewall allow connection to your machine first. You can use another machine in the same network to Check.

Hi there.

If you are using a proper SSL certificate, you are going to need a domain name. It is not possible to issue a valid SSL certificate for IP addresses which cannot be verified (https://www.digicert.com/internal-names.htm) . Of course you should be using SSL if you are using DHIS2 (and especially, if you are using tracker). You may be able to use a self-signed certificate, but normally this will cause problems, as they are not fully trusted by browsers. I am not sure about the Andoid app.

Having said that, you should still be able to use http for local connections, although it should of course never be used if data is to be transmitted over an insecure network, like the internet.

Is it your intent to run things within an internal network (192.168.X.X)? It would be a lot easier if you simply have a public IP and issue use a valid SSL certificate. SSL certificates can be purchased from a number of vendors, but can also be obtained free of charge using LetsEncrypt (https://letsencrypt.org/) .

Thanks for your valuable suggestions.

We have the exclusive server with domain name and SSL certificate. We installed in our local machine that is act as temporary server, we are accessing the app through the intranet and local wifi for the testing purpose. We can put the same thing in main server, let us check whether the issue is resolved or not.

Let me know if anybody can understand the issue with some other aspects.

Hi Chandrasekhar,

With what I understand from the screenshots you shared, please check the user-org unit and program-org. unit assignment. For android app, to be able to see an org. unit, the logged-in user needs to be explicitly assigned that org. unit or be its direct child. It could be that the logged-in user is assigned an org. unit level (say X) and the program is assigned to another org. unit at least two levels below X.

Try reconfiguring it and check. Hope that helps.

I would guess this is because you are not using httpS (i.e. SSL).

Hi Chandrasekar,

Have you configured the meta data as Archana described? That means your user needs to be directly assigned to an organisation unit that has a program assigned to it. Also check that your user has the correct user roles. If you’re not sure which roles to give to user, you can log in to play.dhis2.org/dev . In that DHIS2 instance you can check which user roles the user ‘android’ has.

This is Chandrasekar from National Institute of Epidemiology from Chennai. We are installed DHIS2 application and customization in our local machine as per guideline. We have the issue on DHIS2 tracker capture module.

We are created tracker capture in DHIS2 application with these following things

  1. Create Data Set > Data Element (Domain Type - Tracker)
  1. Create Attribute from Programs/Attributes menu
  1. Select a Program Management > Tracker (Sample Data) > Assign Program to Organisational unit.
  1. We done the sample data Entry it has been saved in database. The data also showed in program summary report.
  1. We have downloaded latest DHIS2 tracker capture(Version 2.2) App from the google play store and installed in mobile.

Now we are trying to capture the data through mobile app with our local server IP address, username and password, but we can’t able access the meta data from the local machine.

Herewith we have attached the screenshots for your reference.

Please guide us to solve this issue. We are waiting for your reply.

You are running on Windows Server with H2 database and live version? Not sure anyone has tested the app on it. Could it be related to that?

Make sure that you have assigned the user to the same org unit where the program is assigned.
